Kidney Pond and Mt. Katahdin, Baxter State Park, Maine. The yellow shaft of light is a sun pillar, a vertical shaft of light extending upward or downward from the sun. Typically seen during sunrise or sunset, sun pillars form when sunlight reflects off the surface of falling ice crystals associated with thin, high-layer clouds, like cirrostratus clouds.
